I seem to recall some candle holders/lamps work with a spring to keep the flame in the right position. Is it one of those?

Well, you are right. It is a candle stick holder, but, it is not a spring. The smaller lever is used to move the candel up the shaft as it burns smaller. from the late 1800’s.. well done i was hoping to get some mileage out of this one.
