INSPIRATION BEHIND THE ARTWORK:
My design, “NWA ORA: WOMEN UNITED FOR CHANGE” is inspired by the African proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child.” The saying and its attribution originated from the Nigerian Igbo culture and proverb “Ora na azu nwa” which means it takes the community/village to raise a child. In spirit, Igbo children are also named “Nwa ora” which means child of the community.
My illustration symbolically represents the diversity and multi-cultural beauty seen amongst young girls and women across the world. Unified towards change and empowered with strength and wisdom, these young girls and women represent the future. Despite unique cultural and territorial boundaries, together they stand strong. The accompanying text reads,
“WOMEN ARE THE FUTURE
OUR HEARTS AND MINDS ARE BEAUTIFUL
OUR VOICES WILL CHANGE THE WORLD
TOGETHER WE STAND STRONG”
