this is looking up inside one of the columns. if you look closely, you may see there is something on the glass. These are millions of registration numbers of the holocaust prisoners. it’s a very moving and strong tribute to those who had their lives stolen from them. to understand just how many numbers are etched into those column… it’s just heartbreaking.

beautiful photo and monument. the fact that it is such a clean design makes the purpose more painful and moving.
When i first visited, i didn’t realize about the number. It was on my second visit, when i went to photograph, that i noticed the numbers. so many numbers, plus quotes from survivors. but the numbers, my goodness, it really strikes you, seeking the sheer amount. and realizing how many of those numbers never made it out, and will only be remembered as just that, a number.

i didnt see this comment in my feed, sorry. is it too late now?
it’s such a great image, but then to read what it is – that is so moving and so important that as the world changes, we don’t forget what happened – not just so we remember those victims and heroes, children, mothers, grandfathers, doctors – each individual but also the artists, musicians etc that the world was deprived of – we must remember them – but also we MUST remember so it can’t happen again.
Indeed, it’s certainly one of the horrible mistakes in history that we must make sure never repeats itself. This is such a moving memorial. I often try to photograph it, but rarely find a way to make it worthy of the display. this was the only image I’ve ever been happy enough with to actually share. Thank you!
