Everything you wanted to know about beast husbandry but were afraid to ask...
For those of you interested in the inner workings of the bestiary, there’s an interview with me in Carmine Magazine.
It’s an online mag & a wee gem! My interview is here.

IAK! IAK SHAKKAKTH! CTHULHU F’TANG!
ahem.
where was i?
ah yes. totally awesome interview – so great to see that i’m not the only person who’s discovered that artschool DESTROYS artists! i had so many unique artistic friends at high school who, once they went to artschool, became lifeless bland carboncopyists making works that didn’t come from their hearts, but got them good marks… and those who DIDN’T get in (or chose to go to other places) are still making such wikkid stuff. i’ve experienced it myself (tho i was one of those who was rejected and didn’t get into any art or design course whatsoever – luckily!), but with writing. the only time in my life since i was 5 that i have felt like i was a bad writer (or just didn’t want to write) was when i was studying in a creative writing course at Melb Uni. it took me three years to recover – and what am i now? a professional writer. these academies destroy true art (of all sorts) and create zombie robots. so YAY for places like redbubble, where actual individualism and TRUE VISIONS are celebrated, and we can all come together and support each other!
awesome interview – i’m all self-righteous and inspired now (as this little rant has no doubt just proven)! thanks! and congrats.
(love yr stuff, btw!)
Firedrake replied
Hahaha…careful who you invoke!!! :)
If you read some of the other interviews on that site, you’ll notice SEVERAL of the artists list various educational situations as being among their worst art experiences. Funny huh!
Looking at the art I saw coming out of art schools in the years after my experience, so much of it had the same look to it. No one was doing anything detailed, everyone seemed to be doing big colourful abstracts. BORING.
I think out there, behind the individuality-smashers and the confidence stompers that are most art teachers, there are people who seek out the aspects of talent in you, figure out how you want to express it, and nurture you to become an individual fully-rounded artist. I suspect they are few and far between!
