Found
The last things I painted in 2007.
Watercolour, chalk pastel, ink pen and silver leaf. I got this paint flicker thing a few months back and have been splattering test canvases, this is the first time I’ve used it in a finished piece. Fun fun!
This one I’ve called ‘found’, though that’s not necessarily what’s happening.
Each of these creatures could be considered ‘mistrustful’ perhaps. How did they come to have a shiny crown? Did they find them? Steal them? Maybe the crowns always belonged to them.
These are actually 3 separate canvases, making up a set. I’ve combined them into one image for RB.

This one shows the shiny silver crown…

As always, such a pleasure to behold another of your creations!
Excellent art work! :D

I like the animation in these creatures (no pun intended). Devoid of pupils in their eyes, they still each maintain their own characters… a very hard accomplishment for an artist, yet seemingly overcome with ease.
Firedrake
Thanks guys! Yes I thought about adding pupils, but decided to leave them white.
Kimberley Suth...
haha awesome. they remind me of animals collecting funny shiny things to put in their nest. :) always amuses me.
Damian
A cool set. I like the way all three sets of creatures seem to be struggling with their partner for control of the crown.
LostBoy1
Very Good Call on the pupil thing!!
Black chalk?
Incognita
you convey so much info through posture! Putting them into one continuous strip adds a strong narrative element…
Incognita
BTW did you mean for the safe filter to be on?
Laurie McClave
Love it Love it Love it…........
Firedrake
Haha Kimberly…probably. I like shiny things too!!
I put the safe filter on in case any monarchists out there took offence to ratty paws touching such an important symbol. Hehe kidding…not sure why that box was ticked…fixed now!

Awesome work I especially love the rat on the right hand side I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could thro him u have superb talent!
Carmen Cilliers
I never tire of your work! Always such detail, yet simplicity of form… Wonderful! (Prefer the images as individual pieces as shown on the side.)
Carmen Cilliers
Sorry me again… I also meant to say that the blank eyes really add to the overall sense of intrigue these creatures have.

Peter Coleman
fantastic work, my three favourite animals (not including beakfaces)
Firedrake
Thanks everyone! Carmen I thought about putting up the 3 separately – but didn’t want to bomb people’s activity monitors…and thought if people liked the set they probably wouldn’t buy all 3. Hmm..if anyone wants to buy just the one, let me know!
The sneaky rat on the right is my favourite. He is the naughtiest.
Lyuda
Spectacular piece Firedrake!
VisionaryImagist
as always love your work and love your style. keep them coming. well done.
Fiona O'Beirne
These are beautifully done. They also could be in the humorous illustration group because they have a sly humour.
Anni Morris
They do look a mistrustful bunch…partners in crime maybe. I like the way you’ve kept the colour choice neutral…as it doesn’t distract the eye and adds to the piece(s).
Herkissable
I’d love to do an art lesson with you and learn some of your technique! I love the characters you do and the situations you put them in tooo!!!
Paul Compton

GREAT. I love your works.
Stephanie Smith
These are great as a set… the repetition really adds to the mystery and narrative. I can’t help imagining the story behind these sneaky-looking characters.

Hmm… I have pet rats and the poses off them is actually quite familiar – if I was to analyse their behaviour then I from experience I would say that the one on the right is dominant and basically challenging the other to oppose him. Do you have pet rats by any chance then?
Firedrake replied
I did, but not any more! They we so so cute but very naughty. They used to hide little ‘presents’ for me in my bed :)
Matthew Chambe...
Lol yeah… I’ve stopped taking them and letting them run around my room now. The presents were under my bed in a concentrated pile that had built up over half a year before we noticed and moved the bed. They can still run around the kitchen with laminate floor now though.
Firedrake replied
I kept finding rat caches for months after the two I had passed away. Resourceful buggers!
Matthew Chambe...
Ha ha yeah… we have a couple of rats where the instant we put any ‘rat nuggets’ (small pellets of stuff, supposedly food) they quickly transfer all from the bowl at the top to various piles around the base of the cage. They are then left untouched for ages… – we have to put them back in the bowls else they just won’t eat them.
Firedrake replied
Very industrious!
Sometimes if I’d be sitting on the floor while my rats were running around, they’d bring me stuff and put it on my lap, like I was a hiding place. Funny lil things.
Matthew Chambe...
I don’t think we’ve had that before. Once though we had one of our rats running around the lounge and he sneaked through a gap behind the supporty-thing for the TV (there is a cabinety thing about half a foot of the ground and on that is the TV). He then decided that he liked it there in the gap where we couldn’t retrieve him and we had to leave him there all day (he wouldn’t come out for food cos he was quite old and not particularly hungry – even cheese) We eventually just left him there overnight and caught him in the morning when he was running around again. Sneaky things, all of them…
