Prince

Behold his beastly majesty.

A big new addition to my bestiary – watercolour, pen, chalk pastel, copper leaf on canvas. He is biggish…35×28cm. As well as on the crown there are little bits of copper throughout.

Crappy shot but it shows the scale:

Shiny shiny
Shiny beast with feathers!

Your work never ceases to blow me away – NEVER! Wonderful pen work, the glint of the eye, the sharp metal of the head… it’s brilliant, but I love your work so you shouldn’t be too surprised.

Red is my favourite colour, it’s funny that more of my stuff is not red. There are orange and purple tones in the red feathers too.

Yes he is regal…but not as wise as the King. He is young, impetuous, aggressive…

I have been studying your pictures again and it suddenly dawned on me (like a light-bulb going on) that one of the reasons your pictures have such impact is that you resist the temptation to fill in the background. Clearly, less IS more in this instance. I love the folds of skin and the contrast between the leathery skin texture and the delicate feathers. Yet another masterpiece from Kaitlin!!!

A fine example of how mixed media can work so well Kaitlin. The subtle lines on the head help to show the curves cleverly.

Beautiful work firedrake! It’s nice to see crafts like metal leafing being kept alive. I’ve always been too lazy to implement it into anything I do, but the texture and shine is something you just can’t get out of a pot of ink.

Dave, yes my creatures are often in a ‘bleak’ setting. Sometimes I think about adding a background but something always stays my hand…

you have such a great style, i especially like the way you handle the different mediums, any tips for mixinh watercolour and pastel, i havent figured that one out yet :)

  • Firedrake

Firedrake in reply to Becc Orszag’s comment, 5 months ago

Hmm..not sure what other people do but I just rub a layer of chalk pastel on top of the watercolour (when it’s dry!). Gives you wonderfully smooth gradients and you can use layers of contrasting colours.
