Virginia Woolf
Another portrait…I just finished reading ‘To The Lighthouse’.
Virginia Woolf (January 25, 1882 – March 28, 1941) was an English novelist and essayist regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century.
During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a member of the Bloomsbury Group. Her most famous works include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and Orlando (1928). more

Beautiful drawing, so soft and natural.
Firedrake
Thanks everyone, that was quick!
Paul, just let me spray her with fixative, then you can do what you like! :)
This is one of the more famous photos of Virginia, before she was married I think, she was very young.
cheetaah

madvlad

Awesome.
Sally Hanreck
you did it! you captured her soul, (and she’s not eve lookin at the “camera”!) no fair!! that’s what I’ve been trying to do in my portraits, but havent quite got it yet.
well done! i like it a lot – and am almost too jealous to be nice to you now (o;
Firedrake
Thank you everyone. I did see ‘The Hours’ but I can’t even remember if I liked it to be honest. All I seem to remember is the fuss about Nicole Kidman’s nose.
Haha thanks Sally!!! Does it make you feel better to know I did the eyes about 10 times?
Brian Towers
To my mind portraiture drawing can’t get much better than this – it has a beautiful classic look with a great balance between strong tone and softness of the features. You aren’t tempted, as I often am, to overplay the white highlights. Your work alone makes being a member of RB worthwhile. Look forward to more Kaitlin.
sparklehen
wonderful! Love to see more like this!
Firedrake
Thanks so much Brian! What an amazing compliment, especially coming from you!!
I’m halfway through another war one, portrait of Rommel this time.
Helene Kippert
Beautiful work!
BLYTHART
There have been many famous portrait artists over the centuries and this piece could be exhibited proudly alongside their works. I agree entirely with what Brian wrote about it. The photo you used was taken two years before her second nervous breakdown and five years before she wrote her first novel. I read To The Lighthouse thirty years ago and recently read Orlando, but that’s all. We look forward to seeing Rommel.
BLYTHART
Postscript … The best way of describing you as an artist is in the words of Tambatoys: “wow you really are freaking talented :)”
kafka
Beautiful, very accomplished drawing, this could be a ‘life’ drawing such is its sensitivity – superb work Firedrake.
Firedrake
Thanks Dave! I studied ‘To The Lighthouse’ at Uni. When I read it again recently I remembered how much I loved it.
I’m very slow…to draw someone in real life, they’d need to be frozen in Carbonite :)

Markus Kunschak
Amazing! Not just the realism but the grace of your style: the luminous eye, the fading hair…gorgeous! At first I thought Virginia was a bit out of place among your great beakface collection but hey, she had quite a beakie nose herself!
Firedrake

Virginia, is one of my Spirit Guides and I have often looked at this beautifully drawn picture over the last few months. I keep coming back to look at it in great detail. You have not only captured her true Spirit but also her beauty. I re-read Orlando in the Summer as did all my friends because of a revelation I received while reading it. I have experienced so many wonderful encounters due to her directions and met so many interesting people. I look at this again today and now leave you one of her quotes, The first duty of a lecturer is to hand you after an hour’s discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece forever. You have inspired me greatly!S
Firedrake replied
Thanks so much!
I bought Orlando & took it travelling but my pack got wet before I had the chance to read it. The whole book stuck together :(
I like the nugget of truth idea! I just got ‘A Room of Ones Own’, which I’m really looking forward to.’ x
