Charles Upham VC and Bar

And now, for something completely different…

Captain Charles Upham VC and Bar (September 21, 1908 – November 22, 1994) was a New Zealand soldier who earned the Victoria Cross twice during the Second World War: in Crete in May 1941, and at Ruweisat Ridge, Egypt, in July 1942. He was only the third person to receive the VC twice, the only person to receive two VCs during the Second World War and the only combat soldier to receive the award twice. more

New Zealand’s most highly decorated war hero.

Charcoal, white conte crayon and graphic pen on brown paper.

This was drawn from a famous 1941 photo taken of Charles Upham on the field – original photographer unknown. The original photo was used with the kind permission of the Alexander Turnbull Library of New Zealand.

Thanks everyone, this one was fun. I normally draw on white paper, I guess I always have it lying around…but I chose brown this time cause I was thinking about desert sands etc. and with the brown you can add the white highlights. There will be more coming…
