This is a piece that I was inspired to try out after hearing from silk painting colleagues how much fun it was to use soya wax as a resist. So I had a go. It is silk painting as opposed to batik as I applied my silk dyes with brushes and then steam fixed the silk afterwards in the steamer for 3 hours. This is actually my second creation.
If you’d like to read all about my process, here’s a link to my blog where you can read the story.
I’m intending to create more work using soya wax and will keep you posted as to how it goes. This is just such a refreshing alternative to all the products which give off fumes and pose a threat to artists’ health. I also use water-based resists as opposed to those with solvents in them. I greatly value my health and choose not have to use gloves and get my silks dry-cleaned.
I love this one Fiona, especially the Om symbol, it has a lovely flowing translucency. I have done some work with wax, and it is quite challenge, this is fantastic.
Thanks for your comment Lorna. I’d love to see what you have done in wax too. x

View it larger to see the gold embellishments. The original is a very translucent melange of turquoises.
