Casein on arches cold pressed paper.
The “Buddy Book” (actually called the Chummy Book) was my Nannas’ when she was a girl and is 80yrs old. I changed the title and the illustration slightly but tried to retain the aged look of the book.
The rocking horse and bear belong to my Mum, and the marbles are mine, so this painting covers 3 generations from pre-baby boomer to gen x.

Ha. I read your description and thought: OMG – It’s an 80 year old book and she has gone and changed the cover – must have erased it and copied the font. Geeze.

Then – realised – OMG it is a painting! I thought it was a photo.

    Well done.

  • Ha ha….no way, my Mum would have killed me if I had done anything to that book! Very flattered you thought it was a photo :)

What a great subject for a painting, Fiona ! it conveys such good memories of the little age and your use of colours especially for the marbles, is pure magic.

  • Thanks so much Corinne for such a lovely compliment :)

Expertly painted, and beautifully composed work Fiona. What a wonderful idea. It will become a family heirloom!!!!

  • Thanks so much Lynda…actually this one is going in a show. I’m still new to painting in casein but I’m hoping that using a little known medium will earn a few brownie points and get it hung. But if not maybe I should keep this one for posterity!

What a charming painting! You have done a wonderful job of making that book look so old. The marbles – wow, very impressive. I love how this conveys 3 generations. Great work!!

  • Thanks so much Tash….the book was the most fun to do. Actually attacked it with some sandpaper to make it look more weathered :)

Oh I think you must keep it for posterity Fiona!!!! It is so meaningful. Do you love it? (You should because it is really beautiful). If you love it you will regret selling it! I’ve sold a few that I wished I hadn’t, and you always think “I can do something similar for myself” but then you never do!!! LOL! I don’t know anything about casein, but it certainly worked exceptionally well here. Put it in the show but put a HUGE price on it, and then if it sells it makes it worth it. Don’t you DARE undersell it!

  • Thanks Lynda :) Already paid for my entry :0!! So we will have to see how it goes (hope I haven’t put on too low a price..although my Mum seems to think I underprice everything…of course she’s biased LOL!) but if it doesn’t sell I think I’ll have to fight Mum over keeping it ’cause I think she would like it on her wall! :)
