The gondola is a traditional Venetian rowing boat. Once the most common boat in Venice, it is now used mainly for romantic sightseeing of Italy, as a shuttle for short trips to cross the Grand Canal, and for rowing races.
The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian Lagoon. Gondolas were for centuries the chief means of transportation within Venice and still have a role in public transport, serving as traghetti (ferries) over the Grand Canal. They are also used in special Regattas (rowing races) held amongst gondoliers.
