Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, lived a King, Queen, and young prince,. The Queen decided it was high time to find a suitable mate for her son. She searched high and low, looking for the fairest princess. That was easier said than done, for by the time she returned to the palace, she was forced to face reality and the sad but true fact was that she did not find a worthy princess. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

One day, at the crack of dawn, the doorbell rang. Everyone wondered who would be out in such weather, as it was black as pitch and raining cats and dogs. The servants rushed to the doors, quick as a wink, and announced the arrival of a maiden who was pretty as a picture. The prince was hit with a bolt from the blue and fell head over heels in love. The Queen remained cool, calm, and collected. To win over the Queen’s heart, the princess needed to pass the acid test of royalty. That night, the Queen was busy as a bee, working like a dog to get things ready. On a bed, she placed a small pea. And though she looked a bit under the weather, the Queen was strong as an ox and began placing mattress after mattress on top of the pea. Last but not least, she placed the thickest mattress on top of the other twenty. Tired but happy, she called the princess to her bedroom. The next morning, the Prince and Queen went to see the Princess. She looked sick as a dog and the Queen, with sneaking suspicion, breathed a sigh of relief. Cool as a cucumber, the Queen asked the Prince to remove the mattresses to see what kept the princess up. Underneath the last one was a pistachio.“But I put a pea under there!” the Queen exclaimed.“Oh,” said the princess, “I’m highly allergic to peas, so I asked the maid to replace it with something else that was green. I hope you don’t mind.”

This is for this week’s Star Twister.

Everything about this story is a cliche, even the storyline. How many overused expressions can you find?

  • Thanks JC! My english teacher gave us a list of cliches never to use. I wonder what he would think of this…

Thank you for the warning of cliches beforehand for it’s funny when expecting them and grueling if not. Cute ending—nice twist.

  • Yeah, if people add cliches to their work thinking its a good idea, it’s kinda awkward when they ask you how it is. I thought I’d play around with them. Thanks for the compliment!
