And Then I Blinked

There she was, in my arms
A child so precious and dear.
Her first step, her first words
Kindergarten was near.

And then I blinked.

Cap and gown, diploma in hand,
Waving from the stage.
Driving off, starting college,
Earning minimum wage.

And the I blinked.

Down the aisle, dressed in white,
A veil over her head.
Exchanging vows, cutting cake,
Driving off as a newlywed.

And then I blinked.

At the hospital a cry is heard,
A baby boy is born.
Father and mother cry in joy.
I back away forlorn.

For though I’m happy, extremely so,
I begin to think.
My turn is over, my time is up.
Now it’s her turn to blink.

And Then I Blinked

Artist's Description

Oddly, wht inspired me was the movie “Cheaper by the Dozen.” The part where the parents are talking about their oldest daughter and how she is growing up. The father says it was just yesterday that she was in his lap, and he was reading her a story. The mother says,
“And then you blinked.”
