On my first proper trip to Kalbarri I headed up into the spectacular gorges.
Walking into Z Bend, one of the 2 main gorges of the region I came across this scene. The late afternoon light reflected off the red rocks creating an amazing site.

Beautiful photo Stephen. I’ve never ventured down to the floor of the river gorges, despite being very tempted on more than one occasion. There is certainly more water in them than I expected to see and the colours are just sheer magic. Excellent work, Peter

yeah I was very lucky with my timing on this trip. the week before i went was rain, the week after was rain. and my 2 weeks were perfect! :-) so the gorges were flowing very nicely. i probably won’t see them like this again. i went in april this year, it is very much worth the walk into the gorge. there’s so many great formations. it really is a beautiful place.

yeah, cokin nd grad. came on a bit stronger then I would have liked in the top. need to get some singh rays :-)

I hear ya, using cokin grads myself and the colour caste can be a bit much sometimes, the ND claim is a bit of a joke huh. Heard Singh Rays and Lee are both good, must get off my bum and get some.

yeah man big joke! i went back to the store and they said “what are you on about?” but it’s a wide spread problem i found out after. oh well.
yeah their both meant to be well worth the cash. i hope to in the very near future. really need them to get the shots i want

Really beautiful – excellent composition and I particularly like the water. Just because I can’t help but weigh into the grad filter debate – since you do have a digital camera, why not save a lot of money, forget the filter and create something far more natural looking and true-to-life by blending two exposures of the same scene? Bonuses are you don’t have to worry about colour casts, image-quality reduction by the filter, or trying to get the line between light and dark on your filter in exactly the right spot.

nice work…. I can never get the moving water like that because there is always too much light…. how did u do it ?

it was quite late in the afternoon- so the light was off the water.
then using a polarizer filter and ND grad filters to slow the exposure down even more. i think from memory it was slightly longer then a 1/2 sec exposure, but with the large amount of water flowing through it was long enough for this scene
