The Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) previously known as the Masked Plover and often called the Spur-winged Plover in its native range, is a large, common and conspicuous bird native to Australia, particularly the northern and eastern parts of the continent. It spends most of its time on the ground searching for food such as insects and worms and has several distinctive calls. The birds have a wide range of calls which can be heard at any time of the day or night: the warning call, a loud defending call, courtship calls, calls to its young, and others. Since this bird lives on the ground it is always alert and even though it rests it never sleeps properly.

Wow Winston these birds are so unique and your capture of it is absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing this one!

  • Thanks Tina.
These little critters are VERY aggressive though. One near attacked me the other day as I was merely passing their nesting area.

Great shot Winston, they do look amazing! :) I’ve got these birds in my horse paddock, they are very teritorial birds. If they have a nest and you happen to be close, they play like one has a broken wing to try to lead you away. Because of the spur on the wing, you have to be careful they don’t dive bomb you.

    Gabe :)

  • They certainly are territorial. Almost got spiked by one the other day (lol)

Hi Winston, where are you based now? I’m in OZ, do you have these birds where you are?

    Gabe :)

  • Right now I am in the U.S. (South Florida), but heading off to Brazil in the morning for 4 – 6 weeks. Going down for Carnival.
