Artist's Description

Wild Flax – Linum usitatissimum

Flowers: Several, terminal or scattered on upper branches. Flower stalk often droops at the tip. Petals 5, pale purplish blue with darker guidelines, yellowish at base, wedge-shaped, 10-20mm long; dediduous early. Sepals 5, often whitish on the margins, 4-7mm long. Stamens 5, united at the base. Flowers can be white but this is rare.

Blooms: March to July

Fruit:, Brown, many compartmented capsule, 6-10 cm long on erect stalks, with 8 to 10 shiny dark-brown to black seeds.

Leaves: Alternative, simple, stalkless, 3 nerved. Numerous, gray-green, linear to lance-shaped,1.5- 3.5 cm long.

Habitat : Dry, often sandy, exposed hillsides, grasslands, roadsides, gravelly river flats and open woods. Disturbed ground.

Distribution: Europe; naturlalized throughout North America.
