Artist's Description

Another homeless man I met while shooting street photos in Seattle. This time down by Pike Place Market. This one is a candid shot, but I took a few more after speaking with him and asking permission. I felt the need to let him know that I was taking his photo and why. He was very nice and seemed a bit shocked that anyone would want his photo. I told him he had an interesting look. I also realized after talking with him that he was out begging for change. I gave him the $4 I had in my pocket. It wasn’t much, but it’s all I had. This is my favorite shot. I like the way the chains and concrete wall frame the wheelchair reinforcing the fact that he’s confined to it. I converted it from color to B&W, since, in my opinion, it makes this shot feel even more oppressive. Yeah, I know…makes you want to buy two doesn’t it? That wasn’t my goal. I was aiming more at making the viewer (you) uncomfortably aware that there are people out there who have it much worse and that even if you can’t drop a dollar in every cup, you can at least spare a kind word or thought for someone who is down and out. A little friendliness can go a long way. See here for a slightly happier ending to another homeless story: http://www.redbubble.com/mybubble/works/edit_im...
