Love the texture and color of the bark, Ray, but shouldn’t you tell ol’ Looney that he’d be a lot wiser to hang out on a leaf somewhere? This spot is a dead give away to predators who eat …uh…Luna moths? Although I have no idea what that might be.

It’s pretty, but I’m not sure I’d want to nosh on one of those specimens..unless I had on hand some Original Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce.

Oh yes…Definitely this is a nice posting.. Would we expect anything less?

Hey, check out the little fella that happened by a passion fruit flower I was shooting today. Awfully nice of him, since the Hummingbirds were being much too shy. I called it Passionate Flutterby.

Thanks for the comments hank, this guy was sitting on the tree when I first spotted him, walked into my house, got my camera, came out, he was still there, took a bunch of shots, got up closer, he didn’t move. He was still alive, but whatever he found on the tree, he wasn’t moving until he was through.

In my opinion the Luna moth is one of the most beautiful things in nature. I noticed your Sea Island shot too, seems we have traveled much of the same ground.

Thanks, Jeff. Lived in New York, (Westchester), New York City, Rt. 17 near the Red Apple Rest, Elkton, MD, and now near Hilton Head, SC. All beautiful places to live.

Ah, the Red Apple Rest, sadly is now out of business, the building was condemned for a while, don’t know if a new owner has been found. The end of an era.

luna moth 101 – they are “hatched” in june without mouths, they live for one week and their sole goal is to procreate, they are concidered common but sightings are rare due to the whole live for one week issue. this one looks in good shape, you might have come up on it after hatching, it takes several hours for them to get ready to fly the first time.

  • fauselr replied

Very interesting, know little about them except they look stunning.
