I do not know what kind of insect this is, but it was on a spent dahlia, last year. It might be a cousin to a “lady bug”... :) But bigger…

Elaine it is a soldier Beetle I think .. Have not seen one for ages .. They are really quite pretty if there is a bug that is pretty … Not in to bugs myself … Anyway he does look just great in your picture anyway.
