Santiago is a traditional Mayan village located on the shore of beautiful Lake Atitlan in the highlands of Guatemala. The major tribal group in the village are the Tzutujil People. The Tzutujil Ladies are famous for their “halo” headdresses. Unfortunately, these are now rarely seen, worn only by a few elderly village ladies..

Hi Michael – great photo – I have never seen the headdress before — I first went to Lake Atitlan area in 1972 — my brother had just moved to Guatemala – he finally left there just this year. I think I still have one of these wipilaea (blouse/shirt) somewhere — incredible needlework – thanks for sharing all of your amazing portraits – dave
