So many giraffe shots are taken against a background of trees where they are feeding. The pale blue sky of this photo, however, provides a clean, uncluttered backdrop to showcase the beauty of this noble animal. I can’t resist a giraffe photo; this one ranks among the best I’ve seen. Love it!

  • Michael Sheridan replied

Thanks, Bonnie – I’ve always been impressed with how many outstanding photographs are ruined by cluttered, distracting backgrounds. It’s often a major problem with my portraits, most of which are taken in busy, third world situations with difficult lighting. There’s always a motorcycle in the background. I think one has to choose between journalism and art and I’ve always found the latter to be more stimulating. Incidentally, I’m a big fan of your birds. Best regards – MS
