Not too many mere mortals are lucky enough to have coffee with someone they have admired and followed for years. I was lucky enough to have coffee with Gore Vidal in the Klingsor Cafe in the pretty village of Ravello on the Amalfi Coast in September 2001. His memoir ‘Palimpsest’, a book I dip into all the time, was given to me by a dear friend 30 years ago. I never thought that one day I would add the autograph to the book. One of the things he spoke about that day was his sadness at leaving this beautiful place where he had lived for many years in La Rondinaia, his spectacular villa perched above the blue Mediterranean. I could go on and on about this man of great wit and charm, who had the most gorgeous speaking voice, but I will leave you with one of my favourite Vidal stories. He was asked once in an interview what would have happened in 1963 had Kruschev been assassinated instead of Kennedy……………..he thought for a moment and replied……………’It is difficult to say with history, but I can tell you one thing, Aristotle Onassis would not have married Mrs Kruschev.
Gore Vidal left his beloved Ravello in 2003 and moved to a house in the Hollywood Hills where he died today at the age of 86.
