Artist's Description

There is a wonderful expanse of green sloping from the ancient walls of Derry City in N Ireland. It slopes down to the famous Bogside area of the city, an area which has in the past witnessed the brutality and sadness of a troubled time in our recent history. Peace is slowly enveloping this city which I fell in love with many years ago as a young bride. I left several times for various reasons but I always returned to the place I call home. Replacing the stone throwers, the army and the petrol bombers are banks and banks of yellow daffodils. What a joy it is to walk among them, to feel safe and content surrounded by the ancient walls and the normality of life for a people so deserving of it.

To Daffodils
Fair Daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
Has not attain’d his noon.
Stay, stay,
Until the hasting day
Has run
But to the even-song;
And, having pray’d together, we
Will go with you along.
We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
As you, or anything.
We die
As your hours do, and dry
Like to the summer’s rain;
Or as the pearls of morning’s dew,
Ne’er to be found again.

Robert Herrick was a 17th Century English Poet
