prelude I
The reason abstract painting fascinates me is probably my life as a musician. Music is the most abstract of all the arts and has the greatest power to suggest , incite or inspire an emotional response. But the visual arts also possess these qualities, and images that depart from recognizable subjects and objects also kindle emotions that do not stop at liking or not liking a painting or other representation. Arguably, colour is the most vital element in abstract painting, closely followed by shape and form. Explaining what an abstract is about is actually defeating the purpose, which is to activate the viewer’s imagination just by being there. A confrontation is created between image and viewer. There is an intimate exchange of emotion and opinion. That said, I will leave you to decide what to think about this artwork. In the original it is 60×90cm on stretched canvas.

This is wonderful Faith. I love the vibrancy and liveliness about this piece… this painting sings a melody of African Safari… with butterflies and elephants in open savannas….. I love how the lumps of colours are quite distinctive at times, but then it all flows together perfectly…

Thanks so much for commenting. I like your interpretation. I deliberately chose an abstract title to allow room for the viewer to improvise as I did when I was painting it.

Thanks so much. My remarks were a tiny protest against over-elaboration about the content of abstract artwork. I once went to an exhibition where bits of printer paper were pinned to the wall instructing the reader in courier 10 pixel that the artist had thought about the artwork but felt that a realization was superfluous and would be glad to talk about the non-representation (in the literal sense) of his creative ideas! Unfortunately, the perpetrator didn’t show up.
