An easy day touring our relatives farm, and some local wild-flower spots.

198208260012 Flooded trees Boyup Brook

The river at Boyup Brook can flood to quite a depth, and this shows what happens during such a flood.

198208260013 Cattle pruned grass tree Boyup Brook

The cattle eat the leaves of this native plant as far up as they can reach. It did not look very palatable to me, but the farmer said in the dry season the story is different.

198208260022 Fern Boyup Brook

This is a tree which the cattle have not pruned to the same extent, because of the difficulty of reaching it.

18208260025 Red flower Boyup Brook

It is another un-named plant, but they grew in several places on the farm in areas where cattle could have eaten them, but didn’t.

198208260027 New growth Boyup Brook

I do not know what this was but it was bursting through leaf litter in a shady part of the farm. Kalaryder identifies as probably Zamia

198208260028 Seed cones Boyup Brook

Again, although these reminded me of pine cones in Victoria, they were not of any pine I knew. Kalaryder identifies as Zamia

198208260032 red pea flower Hester

Our relatives knew of a spot where they said we would find some wild-flowers so in the afternoon we went to a forest they described as Hester. There were no dwellings where we stopped and looked around. This was one of the first flowers, and it reminded me of a pea flower back home, although of a different colour and growth structure.

Another one of them from a short distance away.

198208260033 Yellow flower red bud Hester

Why I expect the flower to be the same colour as the bud I do not know, but it always surprises me when they are a different colour. Kalaryder identifies as yellow hibertia.

198208260035 purple flowers Hester

The colour of these is not right. They were a deep blue colour and have come out very much redder than I saw them. I believe they reflect light in the infra red part of the spectrum which the eye does not see, but which Kodachrome did, so the film sees a very different colour to that which we see.

198208260037 Yellow flowers Hester

The name is not known for this either. Kalaryder identifies as hibertia.

198208260040 Green flower Hester

I am not sure what this was, but there were a number of them in the glade.

198208260041 Spiky plant Hester

`This is the whole plant in its environment/

198208260042 Spiky plant Hester

This is a close-up of the seed bearing parts of the flowers which are hardly noticeable when you look at the whole plant.

198208260046 red flowers Greenbushes

The flowers were not very big, but I know of no other way of naming the plant.

This was our explorations for the day, and we then enjoyed our relatives hospitality for the evening.
