Artist's Description

In 1958 you could still purchase milk by buying it in your own billy from a milkman who had churns on the back of his cart. In the centre of Melbourne the milkman went round not with a horse-drawn cart, but a motor truck with a flat tray so that he could put the cans on and off easily. None of the milk was refrigerated, as his was an early morning operation starting before sunrise, but still extending out to about 7.30 am when this was taken. In this part of Collins street there were cafes, and hotels, so he did a roaring trade.
