This was built as a private chapel by Bishop of Theodulf of Orleans. He was one of the court officials of Aachen for Charlemagne and was a distinguished scholar. The design of the chapel has links with Charlemagne’s chapel at Aachen and the church of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy, which Theodulf was said to have visited in relation to the design of Aachen chapel. Although the design matches neither some of the mosaic work is similar.
