crashing through the atmosphere

in the last few minutes of my life

the flames were melting through my suit
and my eyes were becoming blackened marbles
useless for sight

my body was being held steadfastly in place
by the sheer speed of my descent
into the earthen atmosphere

i was unwittingly cut free from my safety line
by the hand of my enemy
the maker and ender of my life

i was a falling bird now
a man unable to take flight
i was without wings or safety net

for when i hit the earth
there will be only ash and debris left of me
nothing much to make a crashing sound

nothing much of a reminder
that i was an astronaut
or rather a man who could see everything
from above the rest of this world

that’s when i thought of you
for this last time
when disintegration took hold

i remembered a goodbye kiss
i smelled a candle burning
and it all went away

crashing through the atmosphere
