Gopher Snake. Figueroa Mountain, Santa Ynez, CA
Gopher Snake close-up on Figueroa Mountain, Santa Ynez, CA
One of the most widespread snakes in North America, its range extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific, as far north as southern Canada, and as far south as Veracruz, Mexico. This species can reach five to six feet in length, and are among the more “human-friendly” species of North American snakes, mainly due to the fact that they are not venomous, hunt vermin (hence the name) and are easily raised and bred in captivity. When startled or angry, they will hiss very loud and rattle their tails. This is why they are sometimes mistaken for a rattlesnake.Habitat: Found in a wide variety of habitats, including deserts, prairies, woodlands, brushlands, coniferous forests, and even cultivated land. Gopher snakes often live in discarded or conquered gopher holes.

Gorgeous snake. We don’t have this species of Pituophis here in Florida, but we do have the threatened Florida pine snake. For such large snakes they really are very gentle when handled, in spite of their impressive defensive display that they mount when cornered. This is a great capture of this beautiful creature. I hope you’ll consider adding it to the Reptiles and Amphibians group. :)

that is really interesting. I had no idea that any other snake, other than the rattler, actually had tails that they could rattle, lovely pic as well.

Ah Eyal, nice to meet another fellow snake lover, I find these reptiles so intruiging. I love your perspective here and the way the snake is doubled on itself, reaching upward with great eye contact. Wonderful head detail and excellent controlled dof. The shallow dof really gives the impression of movement in the rest of the body. Very nicely captured.

Lumineux, I love snakes and reptiles. I just find them fascinating. I used to catch rattlers and snakes with my brother, till my mom had enough of it after we presented her with a gift box with a little harmless snake inside :-) Thanks for the great feedback you gave this image.
