Arlington West 2007, Santa Barbara, California

Arlington West is an ongoing display of the casualties in Iraq on East Beach in Santa Barbara, to protest against the war in Iraq, and increase the public awareness regarding the military and political fallout of staying there. Each Sunday morning thousands of crosses, as the number of the fallen, for that day, are placed in the sand and volunteers are providing the public with up to the moment information on casualties plus individual stories on the fallen. This image was taken at memorial day 2007 as a tribute and memorial and as a cry for peace…Eyal Nahmias

  • Eyal Nahmias

    Eyal Nahmias

jon, that is hw it was. It is a wooden board drilled with holes and X-mas light were placed behind. Again, all the crosses and the sign are placed by volunters and veterans who believe that the war in Iraq should stop.

Good thing burial blots can be bulldozed over and built upon to make McDonald or something lucretive for some one to sell us something. Can you imagine all the gravestones around the planet would be -if human society actually made grave marker of victims of war where kept sacred to actually show the idiotcy of war over the last 10,000 years. This would make people think, but politicians and developers don’t want that.

  • Eyal Nahmias

    Eyal Nahmias

Dave Sanders…,I couldn’t agree more. But since money and power are the wheels that move at times faster than the wheels of the people will, than we as humans will still have wars and destruction. I only hope that the will of the people around the world will be more active and make the goverments stop it.. It may be autopia, but I wish for it with all my heart!

Eyal, Lovely shot. It speaks volumes. Having experience of the middle east, I can appreciate both the shot and its meaning. Hard for some to comprehend.
The symetry of the shot is great along with the colour. The bitter irony of the meaning is solid.

I just looked at your other photographs; magnificent work and choice of subjects. I am not a photographer by any means, but do appreciate talent like yours. I am a Canadian who has been to Arlington several times and I want you to know that we Canadians grieve as much for your military personnel and families as we do for our own. My father served in WWII and was a Peacekeeper after that; he told me nearly 50 years ago that man would never learn the real lesson and that the fighting would go on forever. How sad that it seems he was right. God Bless You All.

  • Eyal Nahmias replied

Thank you linda for your moving and supportive comment. I truly appreciate it. Your father was unfortunately right, war is in human nature, and I think we’re still far away from reaching utopia, but I always hope and preach for peace.
