I wonder what it looks like,
this forest that is too far in the distance
to distinguish the shape leaf or
number of trees. I wonder what the sun smells like
filtered through a sky full of pine needles and
bird nests dangling from the upper branches.
I take a step closer and
my blurred vision is tinted green and
I hear the whispered warnings of
the voices in the wind. They hush my heartbeat
and their intimate touch smoothes back
the hair from my eyes and strokes my cheek
with delighted encouragement, knowing
I long to walk through the quiet
of those trees on the horizon. I see
the evening shadows extending
across the earth with each breath I exhale and
I know the moon will summon her stars, soon,
to assist her as she minds the nocturnal orchestra.
The sounds drift into my ears, faded and distant like
a memory I never knew but
forever softly shone in my dreams and
I wonder what it looks like.
