Gallows Hill 02 - Nr Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria by

I visit this scene every time I’m in the area since I never seemed to be able to pull the detail of the trees out of the interfering background. There are a lot of prominent hills in this area of the North of England called ‘Gallows Hill’ and I’m sure that not all of them were used for that purpose – but it does make for an excellent title!

This morning I was in luck, low cloud in the valley of the River Eden masked the high ground behind, allowing me to concentrate on the trees and the magnificent furrows in the mound.

Capturing an outstanding monochrome image is my greatest photographic pleasure – since such an image is just as gripping as any colour image can be.

Thanks for dropping by and looking at my pictures – especially if you’ve been moved to take the time to comment on them. All comments are read and appreciated, especially if they’re constructive or heartfelt.

Wonderful minimalist photo. Your patience paid off.

  • Thanks Eileen. Some of them take a while to get as you want. It helps that this was taken from the road :o)

Beautiful simplicity – well-arranged with a clear pattern!

  • Thank you Matthias. Early morning is a must for this location. I don’t think any other time will do to get the shadows in those furrows

So, Simon, does it mean you are shooting in b&w?

  • Hi moyo. Thanks again. The marking in the hillside aren’t walls – they’re folds in the grass. I guess they are caused by either sheep walking around the hill and wearing away the soil or the soil slipping downhill over rock underneath. Maybe someone can tell us ?

I always shoot in colour and convert later in Photoshop. That way you can – if needed – darken or lighten a colour creating a different tone of grey when converted.

I know Kirkby Stephen Simon, but I’ve not seen this place

  • This is taken from the side of the A685 in the cutting at Wiseber Brow – just West of Kirkby Stephen as you go down the hill after going past the railway station. My GPS has it at NY 76483 06833. Gallows Hill is off to the South East [West of Wharton Hall] about 650 metres away.
