My photographic mantra is time-served and simple:
Do I have the measure of that which lies before me?
A testing question, not only for photographers but for writers and artists working in every field.
Just as good writing is immeasurably more than pages of randomly assembled text or a flimsy first draft, good photography sits high above a paparazzo snoopshot, a snapshot, or plain good luck.
Can I find angles unseen, and use the light of seasons like colours in a brushman’s palette?
Can I find eternity in a glance and make blessed memory from a movement or dance?
Can I find true beauty in the mundane and make a mockery of the vanity of fame?
It’s a tall order. But if I aspire after less, I merely take from that which stands before me… and offer nothing in return.
