Luang Prabang, Laos: Monks in a procession to collect morning alms.
For Lao Buddhists, “making merit” is an important aspect of everyday life. Merit is accured to offset any sins one may have committed and to ensure that one’s next incarnation will be better than the present one.Giving alms to Buddhist monks is one way to make merit.
Every day at daybreak, Buddhists monks leave their monasteries to collect food offerings from laypeople. Sticky rice, a staple in Laos, is put in the monks’ bowls. Merit acquired by giving alms brings the giver good fortune in this life and the next.

Their bowls seem awfully large…more sins, perhaps ;-)
    Love this gang.

  • Thanks, mmargot. I think the bowls have a metal insert that fits in the top so they probably don’t fill up the entire bowl.

Stunning shot Ethna – lovely angle and line of colour here. I am heading there myself in January. Do you mind if I BM you and ask a few questions soon? This image really makes to want to travel there Ethna, great work.
