Kerala Backwaters, India: Houseboat. (109 views as of April 24th, 2012)
The Kerala Backwaters are a popular tourist destination where one can rent a houseboat, complete with a small crew and a cook, and cruise the backwaters. The boats are of various sizes (some can sleep up to 15 people) and some are more luxurious than others
Yet another familiar place for me! Great capture, Ethna!
Thanks Marjolein. Drifting along was one of the most relaxing things I’ve ever done, although the voyage got off to a very rocky start. A long and harrowing tale. The highlights: our boat started to sink and I was nearly “lost at sea”. A rescue, the kindness of strangers and it all turned out well in the end. We were assigned a bigger and better boat. It all added to the excitement, making our trip more memorable.
Wow, that’s quite an adventure! Glad you got rescued and can be here to tell the tale. :) But I’m not all that surprised, some of the boats I’ve seen were very rickety. The one that was to transport us to our (island) lodging started out with motor trouble and we had to wait for another to actually get us there. The next day we got yet another (larger boat) taking us to our next point in the trip (we never slept on a boat) – as you say very relaxing… – but along the way we saw both almost complete wrecks and other house boats being newly built or completely renovated…
Gorgeous scene,Ethna! What a mishap for you. When were you there? This houseboat looks very old. I have seen the very modern exotic ones which is not authentic.LOL.I assume they must be safer.
Thanks Pat and thank you for the favorite. I was there a couple of years ago.The boat in the photo isn’t our boat. The boat we were on originally wasn’t very nice and not at all what I had made arrangements for, so I was somewhat disappointed when we set out. But, the houseboat we were assigned after the mishap was from another company and was the biggest and best in that particular company’s fleet. That one was very big and luxurious, much bigger than needed for just the two of us. And the crew was just lovely.

What a lovely shaped boat, very nice scene indeed
Thanks. I have many more photos of these houseboats, so I’ll look through them carefully and submit a few more later.
