Gulangyu Island, China: Blue window with flowers. Featured in Windows with a Romantic Flair, February 2012. (Canon PowerShot G12) (102 views as of April 6th, 2012)
Xiamen (formerly known as Amoy) became a treaty port after China’s loss in the First Opium War and the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. Gulangyu is a small island opposite the city of Xiamen. As a former foreign concession, much of the island’s architecture is Western-style due to foreign settlement. More than a dozen countries established consulates, churches, and hospitals on the island. Gulangyu was officially designated an International Settlement in 1903.
