Gulangyu Island, China: Lane with stairs. Featured in Stairs, Steps, Staircases, April 2012. (108 views as of March 23rd, 2012) (Canon PowerShot G12)
Xiamen (formerly known as Amoy) became a treaty port after China’s loss in the First Opium War and the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. Gulangyu is a small island opposite the city of Xiamen. As a former foreign concession, much of the island’s architecture is Western-style due to foreign settlement. More than a dozen countries established consulates, churches, and hospitals on the island. Gulangyu was officially designated an International Settlement in 1903.
Ah, found it – I’d not noticed this image before. From this view, the walls do look like ‘compound walls’, not load-bearing walls. Very interesting shot!
