This is the second panel of The Waterman triptych.
While the central panel represents the Christ as the macrocosm, the side panels are the microcosm, represented by the Four Elements and their manifestation in the physical world.
Ignis Aeris is the yang pillar, the elements Fire and Air. Volatile and oriented upward, these elements are connected to the realms of the abstract thinking and intuition. Fire is the energy, passion and primeval instincts, that need to be balanced by the intellect (Air) in order to manifest in a most constructive way. The certainty of the Divine, that comes from the heart and from a primal knowledge, needs to be shaped by the intellect in order to become less aggressive and to expand (the butterflies rising from the fire and flying upward). Only through a perfect combination of faith and reason we can access the Divine and understand Its Laws.
At the basis of the picture, handling the creative power of Fire, we see the Magician of the Tarot, which I represented wearing the skin of Nemean Lion, just like Greek hero Herakles. He represents the first step in the Hero’s Journey, or that path that each one of us need to find out and go through in order to become Whole with the Universe. The Magician is the one who uses his power of will (Fire) and mental skills (Air) in order to find his own path.

yes, I guess so… I thought it had a feel of Brazilian carnival when I started coloring it. not intentional, though, it just came out, and I found it very appropriate once the work deals with the meanings of Fire… thank you for visiting, I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Seen the first time… it calls my attention the apparent vacuum of the left side in comparison to the complete full of figures right side. Harmony is something natural and it is harmony which is calling us here. And curiosly enough my mind has been projected more to the force of the fire and the burrterflies, for being those elements or subjects too different in conception, just when real, but profoundly linked wen symbolic… transformation an re-birthing. The carnal or godslike figures are trying to create a triad,all of them intentionally projected towards the heavens….
Really intersting attracted me from the distance the first time I saw it…fantastic!!!!and the information is really valuable…have you something about Tarot…? I am planning opening a group about it, in which to open a great discourse about its symbology… and ould be nice to have you there with your works… in due time… soon…

dear Rosa, your comment is so wonderful and insightful. you were able to read my work in a way I’ve seen few times before. working on the symbolical universe is sort of magical, since things end up getting bound in the most unexpected (an true) ways. it’s impossible to write a complete statement about works like this one, and it is wonderful that you brought to the surface certain points of the work that were intentional but not exactly expressed in my explanation. had not thought about the fire and butterflies though, their symbolism is deeply linked… wow, that was a great observation. and yes, I’m into the Tarot and Astrology. both greatly influence my work.
taking a quick look at your profile, I saw that you are from Spain. my family from my father’s part is Spanish, so I hope to have the chance to visit the land of my ancestors sometime. muchas gracias por tu visita!
