The Hilary Morden Award
for Excellence in Digital Art
SoJie 3, May 2010

A child of the sixties, I grew up south of New Orleans among the bayous, live oaks, Spanish moss and stained glass windows. Born with a natural artistic talent, a love for nature, and an active imagination, I was passionate about creating art and have carried this passion with me throughout my life.

I am a self-taught artist, having mastered almost every medium imaginable, but with the development of art graphics software and lack of space, I have evolved into a digital artist. I am in love with color, rich earthy tones, texture and contrast. Often, I will make objects to scan, use my photographs, my drawings or anything I have available to me to incorporate into my artwork, with the purpose of bringing my vision and message to life. I like to think of myself as a spiritual surrealist, blending fantasy and realism. My mind remains open and inspiration comes from my thoughts and feelings about the beauty of life, the soul and something greater than ourselves. In some of my work, there is a message to be conveyed and in other works, only my vision of the beauty or humor, or irony of life.

It is in the quiet moments of thought, journaling, meditation and absorbing music that images come to me and sometimes when I am surrounded by the laughter of family or friends. I have many images in my mind, stored in little boxes waiting to be born.

The learning process, along with a spiritual journey over many years has defined me as a person and it has only been in the last twelve years that I have come to appreciate my gift of creativity and really believe in myself as an artist. For me, art has and will always be a journey of learning, healing, enlightenment and communication. It is my hope that my art will inspire others to embark on their own journey of the soul.

I hope you enjoy my work as much as I have enjoyed creating it.
