Picnic Races

Water colour ~ I love horses and although I only keep them for pleasure and friendship, my parents were involved in racing for a number of years. In 1978 their horse Arwon won the Melbourne Cup, which, of course, was the ultimate thrill for race horse owners in Australia.

Picnic Races belongs to the following groups:

Complex Simplicity of Art, Artists with Disabilities, Equine Art and Photography, Horse and Rider , Paintings From Beginners, Remodernist Painters' Group and Water Media (Paintings by hand only) Available for sale as

Meant to tell you ‘Stell, Hannah B saw the card of this work the other day and said; ‘Wow! that’s great, is that a famous painting?’ I told her; ‘not yet, but It may well be one day’. See, your work gets noticed outside of RB.

  • Estelle O'Brien replied

Haha thanks John….I’ll take that as being a prophetic utterance!

Have to comment again! I bought a matted print of this wonderful watercolour ages ago, and just last week I gave it to my boss, who had no knowledge or interest in horses, until we began working together on a major research project into safety and jumping racing, now he’s an ‘expert’, and quite interested in learning more about horses, racing, etc. I thought it just suited him perfectly! It’s in his office, so I see it every day still, and can still love it – and now more people love it.

It’s a beautiful work Estelle, and my pleasure in it grows each day :)

  • Estelle O'Brien replied

Wow, I am just thrilled about that! What kind of an office? I am so happy that it is being enjoyed…that’s why I paint, in the hope that other’s will find pleasure in my work. You’ve made my day (again!) Denzil….thank you so much.

  • Denzil

    Denzil

Hi Estelle, just caugght up with your comment …
The print is propped up on top of a filing cabinet, amid all manner of piles of paper, books, folders, etc. My boss is the Director of a research centre at Flinders University (he’s an epidemiologist). Shall I take a photo of it, and post it on the Buyers Booth???

  • Estelle O'Brien replied

Ohh that would be lovely Denzil…if its not too much trouble. Thanks!

  • Denzil

    Denzil

I’ll do it tomorrow – he’s away, so I can fiddle about in his office without annoying him.
    Cheers!

Love the colours here and the line and washes. It conveys very well, the motion of the race. The middle horse in particular, is superbly drawn and painted.
    Keep progressing, Estelle.
And thanks again, for buying the calendar!

  • Estelle O'Brien replied

Thanks Colin. I will get back into it next year when I get moved and resettled. I think I will do what you are and begin copying old masters. I love Turner’s work too.

  • Rayven

    Rayven

The horse in the middle is great. It has good definition and looks like you’re starting to understand the anatomy of a horse. However, the right horse looks as though someone else painted it. I would keep painting this. Watercolor is really difficult. I’m no expert but, I know practice is everything. Overall, the color is really fresh and I’m glad you didn’t try and overwork it. Good job!

  • Estelle O'Brien replied

Thanks for your thoughtful comment Rayven. This was one of my very first attempts at both water colour and horses, and I kept it because I did resist the temptation to “fix” it! I will keep praticing.
