Chopin
Pastel on black colourfix paper
24×30cm
Frederic Francois Chopin 1810 – 1849
After Delacroix… well sort of. It was a very small picture on a Cd cover from my collection of classical music – I liked the strong tones and I love the piano music of Chopin – so I thought I’d give it a go, even though I couldn’t see a lot of detail in the original painting because of the size. I think it might have been better in oil than pastel, perhaps I will try that next. I chose the black paper because I thought the gold tones over the black suited the nineteenth century scene.

This is really lovely. I had a good friend (now deceased) who would play Chopin pieces on his piano for me whenever I visited him and his family. A few years ago I saw Chopin’s grave in Paris … it’s covered in floral tributes from worldwide admirers. Like you, Chopin is one of my favourite composers.

A fine classical style here, Estelle. And in Pastel? That must be difficult-especially considering the small size. putting detail into a small area, is always hard!
I think you’re right, and oil would be the medium of choice for this type of painting.
Estelle O'Brien replied
Hi Colin…thanks for commenting…Yeah, I can see a zillion things wrong with this…but I am glad I had a go- I know what doesn’t work so well now…I have since bought a second hand book of Delacroix’s paintings and seen a proper picture of it, and think I will have a go at it in oil.
