First Eye

Estelle O'Brien

First Eye

Lino cut print- oil based ink on cartridge paper.

Linocut printing for school. We had to do a series of prints at different stages of the cutting- determined by random rules, such as every time the phone rang, or the rooster crowed. It was a challenge to my normally organised mind.

The tribal figure was influenced by Rew Hanks’ work featuring Trugganinni, but here I wanted to combine the physical presence of his first eye with the third eye of his dreaming. It represents the loss of cultural identity.

First Eye belongs to the following groups:

Great work, Estelle. Did you hand color the earring? :-)

  • Estelle O'Brien replied

The earring was inked at the same time as the rest…I just put a dab of red ink over the black before I printed.

great work, especially considering this is your first of its kind, Estelle!

i miss doing printmaking, time consuming as it was…. i love how you really brought out the texture in the figure’s hair, and how clearly defined his facial features are. it’s got a very tribal, cave painting look to it
