I started painting when I was 6 – and I have been doing it ever since…... I grew up in Accrington, North-East Lancashire, U.K. in the austere years of the 50’s and early 60’s – a landscape of slate-roofed stone terraces and cotton mills in near-terminal decline. As a child I played in the upland meadows and the ‘Wuthering Heights’- like moors;
from my earliest days developing a deep love of Nature.
The first real paintings I got to know were in the Whitworth and Walker galleries – by the great Victorian artists with their brilliant skills. My school studies soon brought me to my life-long favourites, William Blake and the modern movements of Dada and Surrealism.
Recently, my subject matter increasingly has been concerned with the landscapes of my adoptive county of Cumbria – as you will see later.
