What is it about photography that interests me? In a word: beauty. I want to capture the beauty of the world we live in. That’s not to say that the subject needs to be beautiful or attractive. In fact sometimes I find it much more interesting when it isn’t. Boring and repulsive things are some of my favorite subjects. For it is you (the photographer) that makes them something of interest, that the eye finds pleasure in viewing. When you do that then you know you have done your job as a photographer. The secret to good photographs is light. Why do you think people love to take pictures of sunsets? Because people see sunrise and sunset as the time of day with the most interesting light. As famous Australian photographer Olive Cotton said, “Photography is painting with light”. So if you can make the light work for you, then you know to make the photograph work.
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Photography is about showing the world what is beautiful to you, in such a way that it is beautiful to the viewer as well.

Photography and the truth
Its been awhile sence my last journal entry. So I thought I should hint you with another question to get you thinking. / What kind of relationship do you think photography has with the truth? And is that relationship different to the relationship other arts, (such as painting) have with the truth? / Looking forward to hearing your opinion, Elizabeth.
