The Hida folk village in Gifu prefecture is an open-air museum of traditional structures found in mountain villages. The thatched roof ’gasshō-zukuri’ houses, have roofs built in the shape of praying hands, to cope with heavy mountain snowfalls. Farmers and animals would shelter inside during winter months, using the doors on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th floors to enter and exit the building, depending on the depth of snow.
