Artist's Description

Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) gaping to regulate its body temperature on the banks of the South Alligator River in the swampy wetlands of Kakadu National Park, Australia. There are only crocodiles, but no alligators, on the South, West and East Alligator Rivers in the Northern Territory (in fact, there are no alligators anywhere in Australia) – the rivers were misnamed by Lieutenant Phillip Parker King in 1820, who thought the crocodiles were alligators.
