Reef Stonefish, off Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea by

Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa), off Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. This is my favourite shot of this species, as the shape of the fish is clearly recognisable while still showing how incredibly well camouflaged they are. The spines on the back contain a toxin that is among the strongest of all the fishes.

500 views as at December 3rd, 2011.

Nikon D300s, 60mm Micro Nikkor, ISO 200, f/16 at 1/60 sec in RAW, Seacam housing, two Seacam flashes.

Awesome- superb colour and detail, would frighten some fish away lol!

  • Thank you – though it has to rely on being invisible to other fishes, not frightening them away :-) It would starve if a meal didn’t occasionally swim very close to its mouth…
