Juvenile Harlequin Sweetlips, North Sulawesi, Indonesia by

Juvenile Harlequin Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides), Aba Point, Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

503 views as at October 29th, 2011.

Looking at this colourful juvenile, the “common name” for this species in use in some books, “Harlequin Sweetlips,” makes sense. Adults of this species are a more drab grey with black spots, thus its other “common name,” “Spotted Sweetlips.”

Nikon D300, 60mm Micro Nikkor, ISO 200, f/20 at 1/60 sec in RAW, Seacam housing, Seacam flash.

Amazing shot! Incredible fish. Is North Sulawesi Indonesia’s best dive site?? I want to go diving in Indonesia but aren’t sure where to go.

  • Thanks, Mark! North Sulawesi is great and definitely worth a trip (I’ve got lots of shots from there on RedBubble), but from what I hear Indonesia has a lot to offer in other places as well – a liveaboard trip to Raja Ampat is definitely still on my “to-do” list.

Hard to photograph these guys (I know from experience) because they never stop moving. Nice work

  • Thanks, Stephen! The trick is to watch the fish for a while and try to predict where it’ll go, rather than chasing after it… though admittedly my divebuddy tried to photograph this same fish and gave up after a few minutes…

Nice companion shot with the adult photo, Erik. And nice shooting; I’m guessing this little beauty didn’t stay still long! AMR

  • Thanks – you’re right, this was a fast moving little fellow!
