Leopard cub by Erik Schlogl

Leopard cub by

Leopard cub (Panthera pardus), Ngala Game Reserve (part of the Kruger National Park), South Africa.

We stopped with our Landrover to have a look at a leopard mother and her cub. Unfortunately the mother was down in a gully and very difficult to see. Getting ready to leave, we turned around to see that the cub had come out of the gully to have a look at us!

Nikon D300, AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm at 200mm, ISO 800, f/5.6 at 1/80 sec in RAW, VR on.

Amazing image Erik! You must have been very brave to get this close! The clarity is amazing! x

  • Thank you – once again nothing brave about it. We were in a Landrover driven by a ranger – the animals don’t perceive people in a vehicle as separate entities (unless you lean out). Thus you can get a lot closer in a vehicle than on foot. Elephants and rhinoceroses have been known to attack vehicles, though – but rarely!
