Mandarin Fish, Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea by

Mandarin Fish (Synchiropus splendidus), Restorf Island reef, Kimbe Bay, New Britain, Papua New Guinea.

Photographing Mandarin Fish requires a lot of patience, as they are quite small (this one was about 30mm long), shy and flit in and out of the coral rubble. It took 49 minutes lying quietly in one spot to get this shot.

Nikon D300, 105mm Micro Nikkor, ISO 200, f/32 at 1/60 sec in RAW, Seacam housing, Seacam flash.

Beautiful fish and very well captured Erik. 49 mins in the one spot – Lucky the water was warm.

  • Yes, and the depth of the spot where the Mandarin Fish hang out was only 7m. Total dive time: 104 minutes!
